Open to Wonder
This week I went to LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art to see Olafur Eliasson’s exhibition OPEN.
This playful exhibition engages with ideas of perception and participation through use of geometry, light, color, and movement in large-scale optical devices. All of the pieces are so striking in what they evoke and, as a whole, challenged my own ideas of attention and viewpoint. I highly recommend going to see it if you are located in LA.
These rings that appeared to “float” in midair challenged my brain’s idea of what was really happening.
In a small alcove off the main exhibition rooms, books are gathered that inspired Eliasson in his creation of the pieces. The list of questions below are mounted on one of the walls and guided Eliasson’s process. I think I might adopt them as mantras for the new year.
